“My town – my favourite place”
For the first time in its history, the Kunstmuseum Gelsenkirchen is opening up its exhibition space for the younger artists of Gelsenkirchen. Schoolchildren from thirteen districts of the city took up the museum’s invitation and for the duration of 14 weeks will transform the late 19th-century Gründerzeit villa into Villa Kinderbunt. Working together in class groups, the children have made things with their hands, painted, photographed and programmed. From joint brainstorming to the choice of artistic media and the finished execution, everything was left up to the children. The exhibition explores the idea of “My town – my favourite place”. The works on display take visitors on a journey of discovery through the colourful world of Gelsenkirchen and, based on the children’s personal experiences, reflect notions and projections of their home town.
The key aims of the educational work at the Kunstmuseum Gelsenkirchen are to foster curiosity about and interest in art, to sustainably promote creativity and enthusiasm, and not least of all to actively engage children in the development of the museum.
Villa Kinderbunt is a cooperation between the Kunstmuseum Gelsenkirchen and the Norten Stiftung.
